How Great CEOs Can Inspire You…..

1 ) Steve Jobs’ Inspirational Story

Many know Jobs as the name most associated with one of the most popular brands in the world. What people may not realize is that at one point, Jobs left Apple in 1985 after a struggle with its board of directors. In 1996, he did return to the company to serve as interim CEO when the company was suffering financially and became permanent CEO a year later. With Jobs leading the way, Apple stock rose more than 9,000 percent. One of the major ways he was able to make such a big change was by reducing the 350 projects Apple had in development to 50, and then down to just 10. He was always focused on creating the next big thing and that mind set remains strong in his company today, Jobs was behind the release of the iMac, the iPod, iTunes and the iPhone.

2 ) Terry Semel on Turning Yahoo Around

Semel was previously a co-CEO at Warner Bros. before joining Yahoo. Yahoo was facing a lot of ad sales decline and employee morale was low as a result. The focus of the company began to shift under Semel’s direction to distributing media and user-generated content through multiple channels. Just one year later after Semel became CEO of Yahoo, the company profited $32 million in revenue which was a massive improvement over the previous year’s $93 million loss. Before stepping down in 2007, Semel was able increase Yahoo’s revenue nearly nine-fold and he also helped create $30 billion in shareholder value.

3) Ed Whitacre’s Incredible Story of Building AT&T

Ed Whitacre was previously the CEO of AT&T in 2007 and had retired but was pulled out of retirement by General Motors. Whitacre had the massive task of turning around GM following their bankruptcy and government bailout. He cancelled unnecessary projects that couldn’t compete against competitor’s projects, streamlined processes and selling parts of the company that were necessary. In just 16 months following Whitacre’s arrival, GM launched the largest IPO in history at $23.1 billion, returning GM to a much more positive situation. Whitacre stepped down in 2010.
